Minna No Tabo

Minna No Tabo was conceived in 1984 by Sanrio character designer Akiko Shimasue (島末彰子). At the time, Sanrio was developing a new line of summer greeting cards intended to convey informal, heartfelt messages between friends. Shimasue sketched a minimalist, charming boy with a round face, expressive open mouth, and playful handwritten lettering.

The response was immediate and overwhelming. In 1986, Sanrio expanded Tabo into an official 27-card stationery series featuring heartwarming life thoughts and gentle encouragement. The card line became a historic publishing phenomenon in Japan, selling more than 1,000,000 cards nationwide within months.

Following this explosive greeting card success, Sanrio developed Tabo into a full lifestyle brand. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Tabo's distinct visual aesthetic — combining soft pastel backgrounds, cheerful handwriting, and humorous daily life scenes — graced stationery, bento lunch boxes, backpacks, apparel, and inspirational books.
